MONROE - At a meeting Monday, the Monroe school board:

• Approved the purchase of a rooftop unit for cooling the Monroe High School weight room for $16,846 from Control Solutions.

• Heard that the Monroe softball team is planning its biennial trip to Florida for Disney's Softball Spring Training. Three to four coaches, 14-16 varsity players and 15-30 family members will be on the trip from March 20-25. The students who choose to go won't miss any school time, and there will be no cost to the school district. The team has been making this trip since 2004.

• Decided to make a schedule for board members to attend back-to-school functions. Open houses are: 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Monroe Middle School; 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Parkside Elementary and Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy; and 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 31 at MHS and Northside Elementary.

• Accepted the resignation of instructional staff member Claire McMannes, Parkside kindergarten teacher.

• Hired instructional staff member Megan Christensen, MHS English teacher.

• Approved the 2015-16 Parent/Student Handbooks.

• Heard that instructors had fewer student discipline issues this year during summer school, which ends this week. Administrators present at the meeting said the change was because summer school was held in one building this year instead of the usual two.

• Approved the request of one student to leave the district.

• Went into closed session to discuss administrative and exempt contracts.

Board member Scott Schmidt was absent.
