On Monday, July 27, the Monroe school board:

• Met in closed session with Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley for about 45 minutes. Superintendent Larry Brown said he could not say what was discussed, other than it was regarding student issues related to incidents in the schools this spring.

• Voted to add an aide for the English Language Learner program at Monroe Middle School. Director of Pupil Services Joe Monroe said there are at least 65 ELL students in the district currently, but he expects that number to reach 70 by the time school starts. The Middle School has 16 ELL students, including two recent enrollees who speak no English, but only one ELL person working 30 percent time at the school. The total cost of adding the position, including salary and benefits, is expected to be $55,300.

• Hired April Caldwell as a cafeteria worker for Abraham Lincoln school.

• Authorized a transfer for Zona Schafer from Northside LMC aide to an EBNA aide position at Abe Lincoln.

• Accepted a bid for furnace replacement from Erickson Plumbing and Heating for six furnace units at Parkside Elementary School. The bid was about $4,000 less than what the district budgeted for the project.
