The Monroe school board on Monday, Dec. 22:

• Recognized Rep. Brett Davis, R-Oregon, as Wisconsin Association of School Board Legislator of the Year. Representatives of WASB were on hand to present Davis a plaque in honor of the distinction. The Monroe school board nominated Davis, himself a graduate of Monroe High School, for his work on a compromise agreement that allowed Monroe Virtual School and other similar virtual schools to stay in operation after a lawsuit last winter threatened their existence.

• Approved revoking open enrollment for two students enrolled in the virtual school for truancy issues. Virtual School Principal Cory Hirsbrunner recommended the action, saying the students were not making progress in their studies.

• Approved purchasing two 2008 Ford E150 XL full-size vans to replace a 1996 15-passenger van currently used. School districts no longer are allowed to purchase 15-passenger vans, so the district opted to go with the two 8-passenger vans. The vans were selected over Dodge Grand Caravan and Toyota Sienna mini-van models because of the Ford's additional interior room. The vans will be available for use throughout the district, but primarily will be used for transporting athletic teams, such as golf and tennis, when using a bus is not practical. School board members agreed the additional interior room would be needed to accommodate teen-agers and their sports equipment. The cost of each van is $24,043.
