MONROE SCHOOL BOARD: CANDIDATE PROFILES: Larry Eakins
Placeholder Image

Occupation: Farmer

Age: 64

What qualifies you for the position: I'm a resident, voter, taxpayer, and concerned citizen of the school district.

Community involvement: I've served on the Board of Education for 25 years, served as an assistant fair

superintendent, served on the Green County Board of Adjustments, and the Jefferson Township Planning Commission. I've been a member of the Clarno Church and the Green Co. Pork Producers for 30 years.

Q: Why are seeking a seat on the Monroe School Board?

A: I still have an interest in providing the best education for the children of Monroe with the dollars we have available.

Q: Do you support the current school referendum on the April 5 ballot? Why or why not?

A: Yes! The state aid formula and the revenue caps don't allow districts with static or falling enrollments enough money to maintain programs. Since the revenue caps took effect in 1993 the BOE has made adjustments (cuts) to balance the budget. The operating referendum that is now expiring asked the community to support the school programing at a certain level and this referendum is asking for a continuation of that support.

Q: The current state budget proposal is posing potential budget concerns for many local school districts. How would you ensure Monroe has a balanced budget if?

A: I always say there aren't any sacred cows in our curriculum, but in reality the core curriculum (reading, writing, math, and science) should be protected most, everything else should be ranked according to importance and reduced appropriately.

Q: Are there other pressing issues/concerns facing the Monroe School District? Do you have suggestions or ideas regarding these?

A: How do we carry the educational improvement we see at the elementary schools on through the middle and high schools? It is being worked on.
