At a meeting Monday, April 8, the Monroe school board:

• Approved a plan to apply for a $937,000 Carol M. White Physical Education PEP grant. The three-year PEP grants are given by the federal government to enhance physical education programs, provide equipment and support teacher training education. John Ditter, a physical education teacher at the high school and the grant manager, said the district has a grant budget that includes purchasing moveable bands for tracking students' steps, iPads, iPods, updating fitness center equipment and cardio equipment, as well as starting wellness fairs in the community.

• Approved the retirements of Monroe High School English teacher Deb Schilt; Pat Gallagher, a reading teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy; Jeff Bennett, an English teacher at the high school; John Daane, a music teacher at Northside Elementary School; Sally Hoeft, an early childhood 4K teacher at Abe Lincoln; and Bruce Scott, a custodian at Parkside.

• Approved Reinhardt Food Service's bid of $243,800 to be the district's primary food vendor for 2013-14. The contract includes a possibility for a renewal for up to three years.

• Approved a $113,339 bid for Prairie Farms to be the district's milk vendor for 2013-14.

• Approved a $126,532 purchase of a chemistry room cabinet for the high school. The bid amount from Wynn O. Jones includes installation as recommended by the finance committee.

• Accepted a $500 Exxon Mobile Educational Alliance grant for Parkside Elementary School.

• Heard a presentation from the Monroe High School Forensic Accounting team. The forensic accounting team took second place at an accounting competition recently. In the competition, students were given a fraud case that they analyzed, and provided advice and solutions for eliminating business fraud.

• Heard a report from the high school's FBLA field trip to South Bend and Indianapolis. Students toured Notre Dame University, Lucas Oil Stadium, the NCAA Hall of Fame and the Indianapolis Speedway to learn about their business plans.
