The Monroe School Board on Monday, April 26:
Elected Pam Wyss as the board president and Scott Schmidt as vice president. Previously, Wyss served as vice president and Schmidt served as president. Larry Eakins was re-elected treasurer and Bob Erb was re-elected clerk. Laurie Genz Prien was elected deputy clerk, a position previously held by Dr. Mary Frantz.
Approved a contract for Monroe Virtual School teacher Maureen McGuire for next year. In March, the board issued required nonrenewal notices to McGuire and virtual school teacher Patrick Cleary because of what Superintendent Larry Brown said were licensing issues with what the state Department of Public Instruction currently requires of teachers at the virtual school. Both teachers are certified to teach in the state of Wisconsin. At the time, Brown said the district was working with the DPI to resolve the issue without laying off the teachers. The licensing issue for McGuire, who is certified to teach English, has been resolved; Cleary, certified in Social Studies, was issued a final layoff notice Monday. Brown said the district will continue to try to resolve the licensing issue so it can retain Cleary.
Accepted vendor bids from Prairie Farms for milk and Sara Lee for bread.
Rescinded a leave of absence approval for Shannan Van Ess, a kindergarten teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy, at her request. Last month, the board granted Van Ess' request for a leave of absence next year. She notified the board she no longer wants the leave of absence.
Accepted the resignation of Ed Richel, custodian at Monroe High School.
Learned the district will no longer purchase bottled water for the District Administrative Center. Brown said school buildings are also looking at ways to reduce other disposable products.
