In a Monroe Board of Education meeting Monday, Aug. 26, the school board:
Honored three teachers for their work in implementing a new literacy plan, a Lucy Calkins writing workshop model that will begin in the elementary schools this year. Calkins is a professor and founder of the reading and writing project at Teachers College at Columbia University. The three teachers honored who have been working on implementing the plan include Renee Tordoff, a kindergarten teacher at Northside Elementary School; Glenda McKeon, a reading teacher at Parkside Elementary School; and Sheila Anfang, a kindergarten teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy. The writing workshop will include writing lessons, book study groups and aligned units of study.
Approved the hiring of Lisa Wunder as a physical education teacher at Monroe Middle School.
Approved the hiring of Ryan Dahmen as an exceptional behavior needs assistant at the middle school.
Approved the hiring of Stacy Thoman as a secretary at Northside.
Accepted the resignation of Cheryl Christensen as a Monroe High School science teacher.
Approved a resolution to pay the premiums for teachers in the basic group life insurance plan purchased from the Wisconsin Retirement System Department of Employee Trust Funds. This was recommended by the Employee Relations Committee in the spring and adopted by the board as part of the handbook process this year.
