MONROE - On Wednesday, April 2, the Salary & Personnel Committee:
Approved the hiring of a dispatcher to replace a vacant parking enforcement position, and authorized the posting and advertising, if necessary, to fill the position. Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley, presented the proposal to the committee, explaining that dispatch personnel are not able to meet the need for 24/7 coverage, and that emergency calls have been increasing. Furthermore, Fire Chief Daryl Rausch has been interested in using police dispatch more, for dispatching the fire department, he said.
Kelley said dispatchers could not be used for parking enforcement, because of differing unions. However, creating another dispatch position would not increase the budget, because pay for dispatch and parking enforcement positions are the same, except for a difference in pay grids. The alternative would be to use the dispatch office sworn officers, whose pay is about $20 per hour, compared to dispatch pay which is $15 an hour.
Committee Chairman Mark Coplien questioned how the city would be able to cover parking enforcement if left with only one person on the job, considering vacation time and possible sick days.
Kelley said sworn officers would have to cover those situations and already do write parking tickets as needed.
Accepted the retirement of Water Department account clerk Nancy Pilz after 26 years of service, effective April 11, 2008.
Authorized the Water Department to post the account clerk position and then advertise, if necessary, to hire a replacement.
Approved hiring of new employees for Parks and Recreation Department summer maintenance.
