MONROE - MONROE - Due to heavy snow and blizzard conditions, the Monroe Police Department is encouraging people to stay home and not try to drive.

Police Chief Fred Kelley said side streets haven't been plowed and are filled with snow because plows haven't been able to get to them fast enough.

"Many, many vehicles have already become stuck and police are unable to assist until a long time later," Kelley said.

Kelley said that except in cases of extreme circumstances that require travel people should avoid traveling.

NO GARBAGE PICKUP WEDNESDAY

The Monroe Street and Sanitation Department will continue to plow the primary streets but won't get to subdivisions until later.

Due to the heavy snow today, garbage and recycling pickup in Monroe will be suspended Wednesday.

Streets and Sanitation Supervisor Tom Boll said customers who were scheduled to have their garbage and recycling picked up today will not receive service this week. They will be allowed an extra bag of garbage at no cost next week.

Boll expects pickup service to resume its normal schedule on Thursday.
