MONROE — The City of Monroe Police and Fire Commission appointed its new officers Thursday.

The independent commission, which under state law oversees certain law enforcement matters — particularly personnel — elected Dave Deininger as its new chairman. Vice chair will be taken by Amanda Fields.

The Secretary is Brittney Rindy, also the city of Monroe clerk. All the members were elected to their posts by unanimous vote. Other members of the committee include Robin McLeish, Jerry Guth and Chuck Koch. They serve five-year terms each.

Following the votes, they went into closed session Thursday to discuss the hiring of a firefighter recruit and the promotion of another.

The City of Monroe has been without a full-time fire chief since April 2022 after William Erb abruptly resigned three months after starting.

According to Koch, the Police and Fire Commission Chair at the time, the reason for the abrupt resignation of the newest Monroe chief “was directly related to the turmoil in the fire department.”

Al Rufer was named interim fire chief shortly after, his second time in the role as interim fire chief.

Monroe has had four full-time fire chiefs since 2016, and two interim chiefs.
