VILLAGE OF BROWNTOWN - Two Monroe men were arrested for theft and criminal damage to property in the early morning hours Friday after a Green County sheriff's deputy saw stolen items in a truck at the Browntown Community Park.
Sheriff Mark Rohloff said the responding officer was driving by the park and saw a man walking next to a truck during the park's restricted hours. Citizens are not allowed in the park from the hours between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The deputy approached the man and saw a sign for the park and a trash can, as well as other miscellaneous items that belonged to the village in the bed of the truck.
Austyn R. Althaus, 18, Monroe, and Nicholas Wolfgang Maier, 18, Monroe, were arrested at 3:13 a.m. The young men admitted to taking the items as well as knocking over trash cans and picnic tables at the park. The deputy also noticed a door in the pavilion that had been scorched. Maier admitted to the deputy that they had started some paper on fire underneath the wall.
Maier was also arrested for arson, and Althaus was arrested for bail jumping.
Maier had an initial appearance in Green County Circuit Court Monday, and had a signature bond set at $1,000 with additional conditions that he have no contact and not enter the Village of Browntown Park and have no contact with Althaus without parents present.
Maier was charged with theft and criminal damage to property. Althaus also appeared in court Monday and had a signature bond set at $1,500 with the same conditions as Maier. Althaus was charged with criminal damage to property, theft and felony bail jumping.
