FOOTVILLE - Rock County authorities on Wednesday released the name of a local man who died after a Monday evening collision on Wis. 11 that closed the highway for several hours.
According to the Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office, Hans Schmidt, 33 of Monroe, died after the truck he was driving collided head on with another truck just before 4:50 p.m. The crash happened near North Roherty Road in Plymouth Township, authorities said.
That’s where Schmidt’s Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound on Wis. 11, when it apparently crossed the centerline, and crashed into an eastbound black Ford F550, according to reports.
“The Chevrolet Silverado spun around and stopped in the middle of the road and caught on fire,” authorities said in a statement. “The Ford F550 rolled into the ditch on the south side of the road.”
The driver and only occupant of the Chevrolet Silverado - Schmidt - was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and only occupant of the Ford F550 was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville with what police characterized as serious injuries. His name was not immediately released and his condition remained unknown at press time.
The Wisconsin State Patrol also responded to the scene for crash reconstruction. The Rock County Highway Department responded to close Wis. 11 between County B and South Dunbar Road for about five hours while crews worked the scene.
Rock County Medical Examiner personnel also responded to the crash, which police said remains under investigation.
