MONROE - A Monroe man was injured after he was hit by a car at about 7:15 p.m. Friday on 9th Street between 18th and 19th Avenue.

Gene Isely, 27, was hit by a car driven by Alicia Laws, 29, Monroe, while he crossed the street.

Myron Elder, Monroe, was a passenger in the 1991 Pontiac Bonneville at the time of the accident. Elder said Laws was driving eastbound when the vehicle hit Isely.

"He came out of nowhere," Elder said.

Isely was hit by the front, driver's side, of the vehicle.

Elder said Laws pulled over to the side of the street, and he got out to see if Isely was OK. Elder said people already had called 9-1-1 by the time he got out of the car.

Green County Emergency Medical Services transported Isely to Monroe Clinic.

He sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Norris Johnson, Monroe, saw the accident. He said Isely stepped in front of the vehicle. He said it looked as if Isely wasn't looking at traffic as he crossed from the north side to the south side of the street. Johnson saw Isely roll over the hood of the car and land in the street.

Laws was cited for inattentive driving.

The Monroe Police Department responded to the scene.
