MONROE - Multi-colored hot air balloons, arts and crafts and, of course, great food will once again highlight this weekend at the 23rd annual Monroe Balloon Festival.

Twenty-one balloons will be featured beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday when the balloons first take flight.

The balloons take off from the Green County Fairgrounds at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and again at 6 a.m. Sunday.

All flights are subject to weather conditions.

People are invited to attend the balloon launches at the fairgrounds or just stop where ever they are and look up into the sky to see them traveling overhead.

The always popular Balloon Glow will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Cost for parking at the fairgrounds is $1. Admission to the fairgrounds is also $1. The Monroe Balloon Rally pin costs $3 and allows people unlimited admission to the fairgrounds plus the chance to win prizes. The pins are sold at das Baumhaus, Radio Shack, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and at the fairgrounds' gate.

Balloon enthusiasts can visit with some of the pilots from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the Square.

It's just one of the many events going on this weekend in Monroe.

The Green County Pork Producers will have their annual dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Green County Fairgrounds.

The annual Taste of Monroe on the Square features live entertainment and fine food as well as an arts and craft show, a farmer's market and car show. Taste of Monroe takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

At 10 a.m. Saturday an historic cemetery walk is featured at Greenwood Cemetery.

Dr. John Inman, who will portray a member of the Ludlow family, said 13 people who were important to Monroe's early history will be featured.

"We'll dress in period costumes and tell a little bit about the person as we visit the different grave sites," Inman said.

The Green County Genealogical Society is hosting the cemetery walk. A free will offering will be taken.

The walk will go on "rain or shine" Inman said.

There is also a pancake breakfast at the fairgrounds from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday as well as more arts and crafts from 6 a.m. to noon.
