MONROE - National Farmers Market Week runs through Aug. 13 and in observance, the Monroe Farmers Market will be offering special activities from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Monroe's Historic Square.

The Monroe Farmers Market has been in existence in one form or another since 1839, providing fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. Now affiliated with Main Street Monroe, the market was recently awarded a $161,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to better serve the needs of FoodShare recipients. The market offers FoodShare clients free taxicab rides to and from the square on market day and doubles their money on allowable purchases.

The market continues to offer fresh, healthy, local foods and locally produced crafts on Saturdays.
