MONROE - Monroe Dog Park, a place dedicated to giving dog owners space for their furry friends to run, opened today.

The park sprawls across 2.6 acres of the city's North Industrial Park. Dark chain link fence separates one large- and one small-dog area. Small breeds will be allowed in the slightly more spacious area meant for larger dogs at each owner's discretion.

The idea for a dog park in Monroe started as a proposal during the city's Comprehensive Plan discussions in 2015.

According to the city, information on the official opening and how to obtain a license to use the park was outlined to the public. Any Monroe residents who wish to use the park must first have a license for their dog with the city and also apply for a Monroe Dog Park license.

City dog licenses can be purchased from the city treasurer at the Monroe Police Department. Those who do not live within Monroe city limits can contact local officials to gain proof of pet license ownership in their community.

The park's license includes the gate entry code and an identification tag. Cost for 2017 use of the park is $15 for the first dog and $2.50 for each additional dog. These will be valid until the final day of the year.

In January, the annual licenses will be given to applicants at a cost of $30 per dog and $5 for each additional dog.

According to the city, applications can be made to City Clerk Carol Stamm, currently operating out of the westside fire station, and fees can be paid by either cash or check.

Those who wish to purchase a license to use the park should access the application on the city's website or pick one up from Stamm. Applicants should provide proof of a dog license from their municipality of residence, current rabies vaccination and current Bordetella vaccination.

Rules for use of the park can be found on the city website under the Parks and Recreation link.
