Monroe Clinic grant targets student health

MONROE - The Monroe School Board Monday approved a $35,000 grant award from the Monroe Clinic and Hospital Foundation to reverse the trend of pre-diabetes, obesity and poor health condition of children in the community.

In a recent U.S. Surgeon General Report, Green County ranked last out of 72 Wisconsin counties for obesity and malnutrition in pre-school aged children.

With the funding, Monroe Clinic will take the lead in bringing the state Department of Public Instruction's new wellness initiative, Movin' and Munchin Schools to seven Monroe schools including St. Victor's.

The program was developed by the DPI in coordination with Olympians Casey FitzRandolph and Suzy Favor Hamilton will develop strategies to promote healthy eating and increased activity among students and families.

The programs will include a Hoopnotica kids program and an Xbox 360 Kinect Style at the high school.

In other action Monday, the board:

n Approved the retirement of Susan Pickett, an EBNA at Northside Elementary School.

n Approved the retirement of Terri Anderson, a kindergarten teacher at Parkside School.

n Approved the transfer of $61,524.70 from the district's Fund 21 Gift Fund to the Monroe Fund. The district received the Helen Rehmstedt gift proceeds several years ago. The original intent was to consider an atrium for Northside Elementary School or for another use determined by the school's staff. A portion of the funds will be designated for student scholarships and for school projects.

n The district received a $500 donation from Swiss Colony.
