Monroe City Council: Sept. 18, 2015

MONROE - On Tuesday, the Monroe Common Council:

• Heard updates from the Madison area AFSCME union representative Thor Backus who spoke during public appearance time, urging the city to exceed the Consumer Price Index in their decision of wage raises for employees who remain a part of the union. Backus cited an employee who will be losing $500 of their income to the new insurance plans put in place.

• Approved the amendment of three ordinance sections regarding the description of brewpubs, breweries, microbreweries, rectifiers, distilleries and small wineries. The measure included a short public hearing which prompted no comments.

• Adopted a resolution recommending a no-parking area in the 1300 block of 16th Street. The measure included a proposal to have signs set in place along the designated area.

• Granted a temporary Class B fermented malt beverage license to the Monroe Lions Club for the Fall Nationals event on Sept. 26 at the Green County Fairgrounds. The council also gave a Class B fermented beverage and wine license in conjunction with an outdoor beer garden to the Green County YMCA for its fall fundraiser event.

• Authorized a resolution for an urban forestry grant and the urban forestry catastrophic storm grant programs. The grant program forestry application is to ensure adequate funding is available in anticipation of the area becoming inhabited by the Emerald Ash Borer.

• Approved the waiver of sewer regulations at 240 11th Street at the recommendation of the Public Works Department. City Administrator Phil Rath outlined the details and correspondence between the city and the homeowner during the Board of Public Works meeting Monday regarding the possibility of a future project at the location, which the board had no issues with during discussion.
