MONROE - In a meeting Wednesday, the City of Monroe Finance and Taxation Committee:

- Discussed renewing the current building inspection services contract with BZA (Building, Zoning & Assessment Consultants, LLC). The issue was put on hold until City Administrator Phil Rath reviews the contract terms and conditions and reports back to the committee.

MONROE - In a meeting Wednesday, the City of Monroe Common Council:

- Recognized the Monroe Fire Department for their dedication to duty and their services during a Feb. 10 natural gas leak in downtown Monroe. Six homes had to be evacuated, and no one was injured.

- Approved mayoral appointment of Phil Rath to Green County Development Corporation Board to replace Tim Schultz.

- Discussed audio and video recordings of city government meetings and sent the issue to the Information Technology Ad Hoc Committee to review for recommendations.

- Received new Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) membership directory and new-comers guide, distributed by Pam Christopher, executive director of MCCI. Christopher also alerted alderman candidates to a forum to take place in late March. She also spoke on behalf of North Side Pub & Grill, asking council members to approve a $50,000 direct loan approved by the Revolving Loan Fund Committee.

- Approved $5,385,000 to pay bills.

- Granted miscellaneous licenses.

- Voted 4 to 4 on a motion to send a $50,000 direct loan to ABC Ventures, LLC from the Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) back to the RLF Committee, with the two more committee members to be appointed. Mayor Bill Ross, looking for council consensus on the issue, broke the tie vote in favor of sending the loan back to committee. Council members directed Ross to find two more committee members as soon as possible. ABC Ventures owners, Joey and Laura Winters, Monroe, propose to establish North Side Pub & Grill on the Square. The loan was to be used for equipment, inventory and supplies and for working capital, to enable them to open and operate the restaurant.

- Heard a report of the Municipal Board of Canvassers for the Feb. 15 spring primary from City Clerk Carol Stamm. Stamm verified the results of the Ward 6 primary. David Riese with 41 votes and Sara Conway with 34 votes won the top nominations and will be placed on the ballot in the April general election. Alderman Neal Hunter was absent.
