MONROE - The Monroe City Band's annual Stage Band Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. today in Turner Hall, 1217 17th Ave. This is the city band's sole fundraiser; the group uses the funds to purchase and repair equipment.
This year's concert will feature vocal soloist Ingerid Kvam, who hails from Mt. Horeb and is currently the director of choral activities at Monroe Middle School. Kvam will sing four classic numbers: "Come Rain or Come Shine," "The Way You Look Tonight," "At Last" and "Cry Me a River."
Under the direction of Brian Bruggeman, the stage band will perform a variety of jazz styles. The band will be featuring standard classics like "Moon River" and "Misty," featuring tenor saxophonist Mary Kloepping. This year the band also is performing other genres including jazz rock, funk and Latin style music.
The current version of the Monroe City Band was organized in 1949 by the late Allan F. Barnard with the mission to provide music to the Green County area. Since then, the band has been entertaining area residents with performances throughout the year. Beginning with the annual stage band concert, performances continue throughout the summer at Twining Park, bi-annually at Monroe's Cheese Days Festival and yearly on the first Sunday in December for the annual Holiday Concert.
