MONROE - During a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Approved for payment bills in the amounts of $3,271 to Green Valley Disposal for March recycling; $181,822.87 to E&N Hughes for downtown water main project; $48,766.80 to Green County for storm water work at the Justice Center; $2,973.02 to Irv's Masonry for downtown coal vault fill-ins; $6,647.54 to Whitney Tree Service for tree and stump removal and tree trimming.

• Authorized Wastewater Treatment Plant Director Jerry Ellefson to continue the Honey Creek Clean Up community service program for Boy Scouts. The project includes about five miles of streams and retention ponds.

• Authorized Fire Chief Daryl Rausch to rebid the MERIT Center training tower project. Rausch said the previous bids came in high, with the lowest bid at 25 percent over budget. He said the plan has been redesigned, scaled down and is ready for rebidding. Rausch expects to advertise the project May 15 and 22, with a due date of June 1. He said the project will take about eight to nine weeks to complete, and will not be ready for Fire School this year. A change in the prevailing wage law, proposed by Governor Doyle, could increase the project cost by $10,000, he added. The MERIT Center is funded by donations only.

• Reviewed and recommended to council to approve a change order for the downtown water main replacement project. A change order to include fire hydrants on the inner ring of the Square added $6,039 to the cost of the project, which still came in about $3,200 under budget.

• Reviewed and recommended to council a resolution amending a resolution levying special assessment for 2007 sidewalk repair. City engineer supervisor Al Gerber said the amendment clears up some entry errors made when the new accounting system began.

Keith Ingwell and Mark Coplien were absent.
