On Monday, Feb. 18, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Authorized City Administrator Mark Vahlsing and the Department of Public Works to seek quotes for survey preparation and design of the outer walkway area of the downtown square. Vahlsing said this was a "first step" in the design process as presented by the Monroe Main Street master plan. The cost is funded through TIF No. 7.

"This is a critically important project for the city," Vahlsing said. "It's important to keep moving ahead on this."

Vahlsing assured the committee the work would not impact Cheese Days events.

• Approved a bill for payment in the amount of $16,479.17 from SEH for design engineering on the Eighth and Ninth streets project.

• Discussed and recommended to City Council to hire Soils and Engineering Services, Inc. for $2,670 to do soil borings on 16th Avenue for an upcoming sewer and water project. The borings will produce a profile sheet of the sub-surface conditions.

• Authorized Street Supervisor Tom Boll to seek quotes for replacement of six to eight portable, hand-held radios. Chairman Keith Ingwell asked that possible grant funding be sought as well. Boll will return to the committee when grants and/or quotes are received.

Stricken from the agenda were:

• A discussion on a permit to hang a sesquicentennial sign over city sidewalks. Director of Public Works Kelly Finkenbinder said the location asked for was not available and another location was being sought prior to the permit being submitted.

• Acceptance of quotes and authorization of purchase for 2008 construction materials and for a new mid-sized truck. Specifications on the trucks are being compared.

• A review of proposals to authorize the hiring of an outside firm to assist in the acquiring right-of-way for the 8th/9th Street project. Finkenbinder said only one quote was received, and he will redo the request for comparable bids.
