Monroe band to feature saxophone soloist on Monday

MONROE - The Monroe City Band welcomes saxophone soloist Allen Cordingley for its upcoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Twining Park.

Cordingley teaches saxophone and is the director of jazz studies at University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and he will be performing "Harlem Nocturne" as part of the evening's program.

Allen, originally from Las Lunas, New Mexico, holds a bachelor's degree in saxophone performance and music education from Lawrence University and a master's degree in performance from Youngstown State. Before joining the music faculty at Platteville, he toured with the famous Glen Miller Orchestra and played on the ships of Carnival Cruise Lines. He also has appeared as soloist with symphony orchestras.

The program will also include the music of television, the silver screen and the stage. Tunes like "Seventy-Six Trombones" and medleys from Andrew Lloyd Webber and the musicals "Chicago," "Mamma Mia" and "Sophisticated Ladies" are on the docket, as well as film music from Disney's "Pirates Of The Caribbean" and "Aladdin." Dave Mosher will be the host and emcee for the concert.

The band's season will conclude on July 27, with an international program scheduled.

The Monroe City Band is in its 66th season and is currently directed by Randy Schneeberger.
