MONROE - From Friday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Nov. 30, the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery will present "From China With Love" by Ohio artist Chun Arthur Wang.
Wang's work reflects his personal recollection of rural life and traveling experience in the ethnic minority areas of China. His acrylic paintings capture a brief moment from sensitive observation; others re-create poetized scenes from fantasy to achieve a dreamy world of peace and contentment. His focus is on the lives and sentiments of ordinary country people as a symbol of both the values of culture and a pristine environment - a sharp contrast to present day urban China.
Wang resides in Ohio during the fall and winter, and in China throughout the summer. His education and life experiences between the East and the West create a cultural hybrid in his artwork. He investigates an oriental mood by combining Western painting styles with the influences of Buddhist and Chinese folk art. The paintings also absorb many Chinese art concepts and themes such as subjective color, geometric forms, reorganized linear qualities, and decorative patterns.
Wang is associate professor in the Division of Fine Arts at Columbus College of Art and Design. He received his formal education in both China and the United States, where he graduated with his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His paintings have been exhibited in China, United States, Chile, Japan, Mexico and Spain. Many of his works are held in private and public collections, including the China National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing, University of Colorado and Ohio State House. He was the recipient of the individual Artists Fellowship from Greater Columbus Arts Council.
An opening reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 in the Frehner Gallery. Wang will give a brief gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter: Colony Brands, Inc.; and Season Media Underwriters: Monroe Publishing, LLC and Big Radio; with additional support from Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
