MONROE - Monroe Arts Center begins its 39th gallery season with two new exhibits on display from Friday through Oct. 24.

The exhibit "Cheese Days Then and Now," features Cheese Days photographs and memorabilia from the collection of Monroe photographer Dennis Dalton. Dalton will also serve as judge for MAC's 25th annual Photography Contest and Exhibit.

Dalton has been collecting Cheese Days and Monroe memorabilia for over 25 years. His interest in collecting began after he purchased glass negatives at an auction featuring historic photographs of Monroe. He recently accomplished a personal goal of collecting a Cheese Days souvenir button from every year the event has been held. In addition to a selection of Cheese Days photographs and buttons, the exhibit will include souvenir beer steins, T-shirts, programs and glassware. Items in Dalton's "Cheese Days Then and Now" exhibit will be featured in a coffee table book available during Cheese Days in September.

Dalton's interest in Cheese Days eventually prompted him to join the Cheese Days committee and their board of directors, where he currently serves as president of the executive board.

Dalton has been a professional photographer for over 35 years, owning his own photography studio for 30 of those years.

On display in MAC's Wesley Hall through Oct. 24 are photographs entered in the 25th annual Photography Contest and Exhibit. The exhibit features the work of both adult and junior non-professional photographers. Best of Show, first runner-up and second runner-up cash and ribbon awards will be given to photographers in both the adult and junior classifications.

An opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Frehner Gallery. A brief artist gallery talk by Dalton begins at 5:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. winners in the photography contest will be announced. The free event is open to the public.

The exhibit has been made possible by MAC Corporate Underwriter: Colony Brands Inc. and Season Media Underwriters Monroe Publishing LLC and Big Radio, with additional support from Michael and Shelley Muranyi, Kevin and Chris Callahan and Lee and Chris Knuteson.
