MONROE - An electronic monitoring program started in June 2011 for inmates in Green County lowered the jail population in 2012, according to Sheriff Jeff Skatrud.

The average daily number of in-jail inmates for the year was 51, he said. Without electronic monitoring, it would have been 56.

"That held us down," he said. Four and a half inmates per day on average used the program in 2012, saving the jail the cost of meals and housing.

Overall, however, jail population was higher in 2012. The jail served 55,551 meals, versus 50,587 in 2011.

Skatrud presented these statistics to the Green County Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee at its monthly meeting Monday morning.

He also reported seven traffic fatalities in 2012, versus eight in 2011. None were to blame on alcohol, he said. Inattentive driving, failing to yield and driving left of center were some of the contributing factors.

The sheriff's department is currently hiring for a dispatcher and has received 49 applicants so far, he said. A written test for the position is expected Jan. 26.
