Mold test part of Black Hawk plan to be 'super careful'

SOUTH WAYNE - Mold at Black Hawk School will be on the agenda at Monday's school board meeting in South Wayne.

The district contracts with EMC to check for mold at the South Wayne school annually, according to interim superintendent Peter Etter. EMC tested for mold spores again this year and will present its findings at Monday's meeting.

The district had a problem with mold six or seven years ago. Etter said to the best of his knowledge that problem has been resolved and EMC did not find any new mold problems this year.

The school did have a leaking roof earlier this year, which caused water to get into the school building. The roof is flat, and with the unusual winter weather conditions, leaks developed where drains were frozen over, Etter said. The roof was recently repaired and damaged ceiling tiles replaced.

The district has asked EMC to re-test since the roof repair to ensure no new mold spores have developed.

Etter said he believes it's best to be "super careful."

"I'm not aware of any problems, but let's err on side of safety," he said.

School board president Jason Rupnow concurred mold testing is "a precautionary thing - we want to make sure everything is in order." He said the elementary school is the primary concern, as that's where past problems were.

"If there is a problem, we obviously want to get it fixed," Rupnow said. "We don't want to have mold in our school."

Etter and Rupnow also encouraged parents with concerns about mold to attend the meeting so they can ask questions of EMC directly. The meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday in the library at the South Wayne school building.
