MONROE - Project World students from Monroe Middle School are prepared to put a new spin on Halloween this year. Instead of trick-or-treating for candy on Sunday, they're asking families to donate canned food.

From 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, October 31, the students will be stopping at homes throughout Monroe, asking for donations that they will take directly to the Green County Food Pantry. Their goal is to collect 2,000 food items. Some of the items needed are canned fruits and vegetables, pork and beans; boxes of potatoes, hamburger or tuna helper; tuna; macaroni and cheese; soups; peanut butter; cake or brownie mixes; pancake mixes and syrup; oatmeal; crackers; toothbrushes and toothpaste; bar soap; and deodorant.

Students have been making and hanging posters around town announcing the event. On Thursday, they distributed flyers to families to let them know about their project, and to share statistics on hunger in Green County.

According to information gathered by the students, the Green County Food Pantry served 2,350 families in 2009 and more than 400 individuals in September 2010.
