MONROE - The clock tower and a section of roof at Monroe Middle School will get a facelift after the Monroe school board voted unanimously Monday to hire Building Envelope Professionals Group Inc. LLC for $15,440 to complete engineering and design development work for the two projects.

The two projects were included in the district's budget after voters in 2016 approved a $1.5 million referendum per year for three years to maintain programming and services and $460,000 per year for three years for safety and maintenance projects.

According to the bid estimate by BEPG, the clock tower is leaking and weathered. The district plans to repair the clock tower and install a section of new roof at the middle school next to the clock tower.

"We wanted to hold off on the Parkside driveway and the middle school playground projects to make sure they are not affected by anything in the facility study," Monroe District Business Administrator Ron Olson said during the board's finance committee meeting.

Monroe District Administrator Rick Waski said the district could go out for bids for the two projects this spring.

The finance committee recommended the engineering and design development estimate from BEPG to the full board Monday. Two other projects the district is considering are Parkside Elementary School driveway asphalt and retaining wall work and the middle school playground resurfacing.

Olson said after the facility study is complete, if the district decides to complete the projects at Parkside and the middle school playground, the district would still get a discounted rate by BEPG. The engineering cost for the Parkside entrance is $13,350, and the middle school playground is also estimated at $13,350.

In other action, the board:

n Approved spending up to almost $29,000 for two double-stack ovens from Kavanough Restaurant supply in Madison for Monroe High School. The ovens are being paid for by money from the food service department.

n Approved spending about $12,900 to purchase four access controls from Integral Building Systems for the middle school. Middle school principals want the access controls installed on the second- and third-floor south and east stairwell doors to help regulate student movement and after-school events.

n Renewed a WIAA girls swim cooperative team with New Glarus for two years - 2018-19 and 2019-20 - and approved the co-op agreement that details the cost for New Glarus High School.
