MONROE - A Mineral Point man was killed in a two-vehicle collision Thursday, May 17, about three miles east of Shullsburg.
His death marks the first traffic fatality of the year for Lafayette County.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, the man was driving a car northbound on Summit Road/County E at about 9:30 a.m. when he crossed Wisconsin 11 and apparently did not see a semi-tractor trailer headed westbound on the highway.
The driver of the semi, a Monroe man, reportedly couldn't swerve in time and T-boned the car directly in the passenger side, pushing it down the road.
The Mineral Point man was declared dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas.
The semi driver was uninjured.
The sheriff's department is withholding the names of the men until family members can be reached.
Both men were wearing their seatbelts. The Shullsburg EMS and Fire Departments, Darlington Fire Department and Wisconsin State Patrol also responded to the scene.
