MONROE - Monroe High School principal Mark Burandt will resign at the end of this school year.

The school board accepted Burandt's resignation at its meeting Monday. Burandt said in a telephone interview after the meeting that his decision was based on personal reasons.

"It's time to move on," he said. He declined to share further details on his resignation or to discuss future plans, but did say he hoped those plans were in the field of education.

"I feel that I must seek other career alternatives in the world of education," Burandt said in his resignation letter. The letter was dated Jan. 25, but marked as received by the district Jan. 11.

"I appreciate the support of the board of education and community of Monroe for the five years I have been able to be principal at Monroe High School. It has been an honor and a pleasure. Monroe is an excellent community and I have been fortunate to be a part of (it) for five years. Perhaps other opportunities will appear that I may stay in Monroe," Burandt said in his letter.

He said he gave notice at this time to allow the district time to find a replacement. Burandt's resignation is effective June 30.

Superintendent Larry Brown declined to give further details on Burandt's resignation, saying any further information should come from Burandt.

Burandt, a Brodhead High School graduate, was the assistant principal at Fond du Lac High School before coming to Monroe as principal.

The district will also lose two other familiar faces at the end of this year.

Kevin Keen announced late last week his plans to retire as athletic director, math teacher and varsity girls basketball coach at MHS at the end of this year.

"It has been a very rewarding 36 years here at Monroe High School and I appreciate all that everyone has done for me," Keen said in a Jan. 29 letter to administrators announcing his retirement.

Howie Jubeck, Monroe Middle School physical education and health teacher and athletic director, also announced his plans to retire at the end of this year. He has been with the district for 33 years.

In a Feb. 8 letter to administrators announcing his retirement, Jubeck thanked his fellow teachers, the school board and administration.

"To say I have the privilege to work with many talented and dedicated people over the years would be a definite understatement," he wrote.

The school board accepted Keen's and Jubeck's retirements Monday.
