MONROE - The University of Wisconsin-Extension will be holding informational meetings throughout the state on the new Margin Protection Plan for Dairy program. The first meeting will be held for dairy farmers in Green, Lafayette and western Rock Counties from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 26 in the multi-purpose rooms at the Green County Justice Center, 2841 6th St.
Like the old MILC, MPP-Dairy will be administered through a local Farm Service Agency office. The Livestock Gross Margin program for Dairy will continue to exist, but producers are eligible to participate in only one of these programs and will have to choose between them when they sign up this fall.
MPP-Dairy is an insurance-like product; premiums will be subsidized and will be offered at reduced rates for producers who market less than four million pounds of milk annually. It is a voluntary risk management program that provides payments to producers when the margin between the national all milk price and a national average feed cost falls below a chosen trigger level. Producers will sign up for the trigger level and select how much of their historic production to cover during a sign-up period once a year.
Mark Stephenson, University of Wisconsin's director of dairy policy analysis, will explain how the new MPP-Dairy program works, what protection is offered and how much it will cost, and he will provide tools to help dairy farmers think about their personal decision process.
For more information or to register for the meeting, contact the Green County Extension Office at 608-328-9440. To register, contact Mark Mayer, dairy and livestock agent, at mark.mayer@ces.uwex.edu.
