MONROE - Tony Fuchs could only watch and shake his head while his shed, which contained antique cars and other items was completely destroyed Tuesday.
Firefighters from Monroe, Juda, Brodhead, New Glarus, Monticello and Browntown responded to a shed fire at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at W3986 Towns Road north of County FF.
Smoke billowed from the shed and could be seen from 10 miles away.
Fuchs said the shed contained two 1964 Ford Falcons, a John Deere tractor, a semi, a forklift, an all-terrain vehicle, tires, paint and other items.
Some of the equipment inside the shed was used to pull mobile homes, which Fuchs does for a living.
"I was in there about an hour and a half ago," he said as he looked at the shed.
Fuchs said some of his antique cars were already out of the shed when he saw smoke coming from the building. The fire seemed to have started on the east end of the shed, he said, but he wasn't sure.
Fuchs went to the shed door to see if he could get anything out of the building but he wasn't able to get inside.
"When I opened the door the smoke came rushing out," he said.
Bonnie Fuchs, who lives down the road from her son's house, said she was at home when she heard the fire trucks. She soon learned her son's shed was on fire, she said.
"His livelihood was in that shed," she said as she sat on a trailer, several feet away from the flames and smoke.
The fire was under control after about 45 minutes but Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch told Fuchs the building was a total loss.
"We're going to push it in," he told Fuchs. "There's nothing in there that's salvageable."
Green County Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
