MONROE - The fifth anniversary of the death of Monsignor Thomas Campion of Monroe will be commemorated in the televised Apostolate to the Handicapped mass at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Campion founded the Apostolate to the Handicapped for the Diocese of Madison in 1967 and served as its director until his death on Nov. 12, 2010 at the age of 79. He was well-known throughout the community and region for his work with the Apostolate, which included weekly masses televised on WISC-TV Channel 3 in Madison, as well as an annual Christmas party and outing to the Wisconsin Dells. Campion was affectionately known as "Father Tom" and "T.C."
Monsignor Larry Bakke now serves as the director of the Apostolate and presides over the weekly television masses, according to the Catholic Herald, the Madison diocese's newspaper.
The mass will include Monroe natives Pat Bowdish, one of the original "Campion's Champions" from Monroe High School, Mitch Quade, and Kevin Conlin. Serving as acolytes will be Matt Monahan and Matt Coplien, who both served as acolytes under Campion and now Bakke, according to the Herald.
At the end of the mass there will be a video of Campion.
