MONROE - A Monroe man who spat on two Monroe police officers following a Feb. 1 altercation at the Friendly Inn, 1335 17th St., will not spend any time behind bars.

Garrett J. Haffele, 28, was sentenced to 18 months of probation Friday after he pleaded no contest to Class A misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer and bail jumping.

Judge Thomas Vale ordered Haffele to remain sober, undergo alcohol treatment and counseling, and pay supervision and court costs. Police records indicate Haffele owes the court $176.

Vale told Haffele, who appeared in person with his attorney Joseph Pecora, the sentence is Haffele's "last best chance" to get his drinking under control.

"You're past the age when we can chalk this up to youthful immaturity or recklessness," Vale said. "If you don't follow these conditions - if you continue to drink - you'll be brought back to this court and incarceration will be the only option."

Haffele was arrested and jailed Feb. 1 after a bouncer at the tavern kicked him out, only for Haffele to return and behave in a disorderly manner.

Under the agreement struck by Pecora and District Attorney Gary Luhman struck, charges of battery, disorderly conduct and throwing or discharging bodily fluids at a public safety worker were dismissed.
