MONROE — A Stoughton man trying to get home after tubing on the Sugar River stole a car, crashed it into a marsh and then tried to steal other vehicles, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Erik A. Skavlen, 21, was jailed on a second-offense charge of operating while intoxicated as well as charges of disorderly conduct and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was also cited for failure to report a motor vehicle crash and hit-and-run on property adjacent to a highway.

At about 6 p.m. Saturday, July 6, deputies responded to 911 call about a crashed and abandoned Chevrolet Impala in Brooklyn. Soon after, they received another 911 call reporting a man trying to steal an occupied car at the Brooklyn fire station on West Main Street.

The 911 caller reported the man then tried to gain entry into a second vehicle and fled on foot. While deputies were nearby, the suspect tried to break into a residence in the 100 block of Union Road on the Dane County side of Brooklyn.

Deputies located Skavlen, identified him as the suspect and arrested him.

Further investigation revealed Skavlen had stolen the 2010 Chevrolet Impala earlier in Albany “while attempting to return home after tubing down the Sugar River,” the sheriff’s office reported.

Deputies determined that Skavlen went off the road on South Rutland Avenue at Wisconsin 104 in Brooklyn while driving the Impala.

The car traveled through a yard, over a fire pit, through two fences and across several hundred yards of crop field before getting stuck in a cattail marsh.

Skavlen was uninjured. The Impala sustained moderate front-end damage and undercarriage damage.
