FREEPORT — A Freeport man was sentenced last week to life in prison for fatally shooting two men outside a bar in Cedarville.

Devin L. Marcum, 23, took the case to trial in August in Stephenson County Circuit Court but the jury found him guilty.

On Nov. 13, he was sentenced to life for the deaths of Kyle Tucker, 35, and Shaun Bradbury, 36, both of Freeport, during a fight outside the Cedar Inn in the early morning hours of Feb. 3. Marcum was also sentenced to 32 years in prison for the attempted murder of 35-year-old Michael Steinhauser, who recovered from his injuries.

Marcum bought the gun illegally to protect his family after getting upset by something one of his nine sisters posted on Facebook and he went out that night looking for revenge, according to the Freeport Journal Standard.

“He just shot three people because he was upset by what someone else posted on Facebook. And somebody had to pay,” Stephenson County State’s Attorney Carl Larson told jurors.

Larson said the victims were unarmed, weren’t involved in the Facebook messages that upset Marcum and didn’t have a problem with him.

Tucker is survived by his wife and two daughters, as is Bradbury.
