MONROE - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department is requesting public assistance in identifying a man who distributed several counterfeit bills Tuesday evening.

According to a Sheriff's Department news release, an unknown man passed several counterfeit $50 bills at businesses throughout the county.

The man, who was recorded by several security cameras, appears to be a heavyset Hispanic man, about 240 pounds and 5-foot-8, with light facial hair on his upper lip and chin. The man was wearing a flat-brimmed baseball cap, blue jeans, a black shirt and a gray long-sleeve pullover.

The man allegedly used some of the counterfeit bills to pay for drinks at taverns and then pocketed the change before leaving. The perpetrator left the scene in a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Buick LeSabre, driven by an unknown accomplice.

The false bills the man distributed appear convincingly real and can only be distinguished from genuine bills under ultraviolet light, according to the release.

Anyone with information about the man or the incidents is encouraged to contact the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.
