DARLINGTON — A former Benton man was sentenced Feb. 25 to one year on probation for a case alleging he threatened to shoot and kill everyone at the Benton public schools last year.

As part of a plea deal in Lafayette County Circuit Court, a felony charge of making terrorist threats was dismissed against Aaron Neil Coley, 20, along with two felony counts of bail jumping.

Coley, who now has a Dubuque address, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and bail jumping. He is eligible to have the convictions expunged from his record if he successfully completes his probation. If his probation is revoked, he has 30 days of sentence credit.

On May 22, Coley threatened to use guns against law enforcement and shoot and kill everyone at Benton School, 41 Alma St., which houses about 240 students in grades K-12, according to court records.

Coley is already serving four years on probation for convictions from 2018 related to a break-in at the Benton Bible Church and a rash of gun thefts out of cars in Benton and Cuba City. He was also sentenced to nine months in jail in those cases.
