DARLINGTON — A Janesville man driving a UTV on the Cheese Country Trail near Gratiot suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing Sunday evening.
Cory A. Williams, 41, was listed in critical condition at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison as of midday Monday, a hospital spokesperson reported.
Williams was flown by MedFlight helicopter to the hospital after he was found unresponsive and not breathing at the accident scene, according to a release from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
His passenger, Heidi M. Weber, 28, Monroe, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Monroe Clinic ER.
Alcohol and “careless operation” appear to be contributing factors in the UTV crash, according to Sheriff Reg Gill. It happened on the Cheese Country Trail near Gillie Lane, just north of Gratiot.
A 911 call at about 6:20 p.m. Sunday alerted authorities of the accident. The Gratiot Fire Department, Gratiot First Response, Darlington Area Ambulance Service and Green County EMS responded along with deputies.
Williams was eastbound when he lost control of the UTV, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times. He was taken first by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington, then transferred to UW Hospital in Madison.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, according to Gill.
