MONROE — The Feb. 19 pursuit of a Sauk County Jail escapee ended just south of the state line when he crashed a stolen SUV into another vehicle, injuring himself and the other driver, according to police.

Austin J. Dailey, 19, Baraboo, tried to run from the crash scene at Rock City Road and Illinois 75 but was immediately apprehended by Stephenson County deputies at about 4:30 p.m.

Dailey and the other driver, a female juvenile, were taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital for treatment of their injuries. She was treated and released. Dailey was admitted to the hospital, in custody.

The pursuit of Dailey began earlier in the day in Baraboo.

Dailey was wanted in connection to an amber alert, after Baraboo police saw him with a 15-year-old girl in the passenger seat and believed she was not with him voluntarily.

But soon after, the girl was found safe at her home in Baraboo, where Dailey had dropped her off before continuing southbound toward Illinois.

Dailey also had a warrant out for his arrest for walking away from his Huber work release through the Sauk County Jail, where he was serving a sentence for convictions related to repeated nonconsensual sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl in 2018, according to court records.

He was also wanted for driving a Dodge Journey SUV that had been stolen in Baraboo.

At about 4:15 p.m., Green County deputies observed Dailey in the stolen SUV and tried to stop him on Wisconsin 69 at Hill Lane, Town of Monroe. At this point, the vehicle still had an amber alert on it.

Dailey initially stopped for police, then drove off into the dead-end cul-de-sac of Hill Lane and hit a mailbox. He then returned to Wis. 69 with deputies, the Wisconsin State Patrol and Monroe police in pursuit. The chase continued southbound on Wis. 11 and County S before being terminated at the state line and taken over by Illinois officers.

A Stephenson County deputy observed Dailey driving at “a very high rate of speed” on Rock City Road. Before the deputy could stop him, Dailey blew the stop sign at Ill. 75 and crashed into a westbound vehicle on Ill. 75, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.

Dailey, who has also lived in recent years in Pecatonica, Illinois, faces charges including reckless driving and possession of a stolen vehicle.
