Man climbs tower, won't come down

BRODHEAD - A Brodhead man kept law enforcement in a two-hour standoff early Friday morning, April 27, when he refused to come down from the city's westside water tower.

Jason Buttchen, 24, eventually cooperated with law enforcement and agreed to climb down the 145-foot tower near West 3rd Avenue and 11th Street.

Alcohol is a suspected factor in the incident, says Thomas Moczynski, chief of Brodhead Police.

"At this point, it looks like he was just concerned about getting in trouble," Moczynski said.

A Brodhead police officer noticed a man standing on the catwalk of the water tower at about 4 a.m. When Buttchen refused to come down, negotiators from the Green County Sheriff's Department responded to help. The Brodhead Fire, EMS, Street, and Water and Light Departments also responded to the scene.

Buttchen was later transported to Monroe Clinic for a check-up due to his lengthy exposure to the cold early-morning temperatures, according to Moczynski.
