MONROE — Police cited a 79-year-old Monroe man for failure to maintain control of a vehicle Sept. 29 after he crashed into a building on 10th Street.

Daniel C. Bernet was exiting the First National Bank & Trust drive-in parking lot at about 9:45 a.m. when he pressed the accelerator pedal by mistake, causing him to cross 10th Street and crash into Clarno Mutual Insurance, 1922 10th St., said Capt. Jerry Dahlen, Monroe Police Department.

Bernet was transported from the scene by Green County EMS for treatment of minor injuries.

Both the vehicle and building, a converted brick house, sustained major damage.

Ryan Lindsey, the city building inspector, responded to the scene, along with the Monroe Fire Department.

Lindsey said Bernet’s car broke the front pillar under the porch roof and damaged the brick exterior but didn’t break into the building’s interior. A contractor on scene put a support back in under the porch so the entrance is safe.
