MONROE - A Monroe man was charged Tuesday with possession of methamphetamine after he received a package containing nearly 100 grams of the substance Thursday.
Brandon Lohaus, 41, faces a Class C felony count of possessing amphetamine with intent to distribute and a Class H felony count of bail jumping.
According to a criminal complaint, Lohaus was charged after an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service into suspicious packages.
Postal inspectors flagged a suspicious package sent to Lohaus from a Danielle Ferguson in San Dimas, California, on May 23. On June 1, inspectors executed a search warrant on the package and found 96 grams of a white crystalline substance later determined to be methamphetamines.
After the discovery, postal workers contacted Lohaus and told him he had received a package. Monroe Police officers arrested him immediately after he accepted the package at the Monroe Post Office.
Lohaus admitted that he had purchased the meth on the "dark web," a subsection of the internet where high encryption masks users' identities and IP addresses. Among other things, the dark web hosts a thriving black market of illicit goods.
Lohaus' maximum possible sentence is 28 years in prison. His preliminary hearing will take place on July 11.
