Man charged for disorderly behavior at Monticello library
Gavel

MONTICELLO — An incident at the Monticello Public Library in mid-June ended in charges for a man who a frequent patron said made lewd noises and was touching himself inappropriately in the public space.

Clyde Lee Leverton, 47, Belleville, was charged with a misdemeanor offense of disorderly conduct after the director of the library contacted police just before 4 p.m. on June 14.

According to the criminal complaint a frequent library visitor was putting a puzzle together when she noticed a man making loud grunting sounds nearby to get her attention. When she looked in his direction, she noticed the man was “stroking” the outside of his clothing.

In the complaint, a clerk noted Leverton had been recently visiting the library and making patrons feel uncomfortable.

Leverton left the library before authorities arrived, but his license plate number was taken down. The woman identified him out of a photo lineup.

Leverton has an initial appearance in Green County Circuit Court at 1:15 p.m. Aug. 6. He could face a maximum of 90 days in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.
