DARLINGTON — An 18-year-old Darlington man faces charges after reportedly stealing a utility-terrain vehicle valued at $8,000 and then crashing it while armed with a stun gun.
Hunter L. Butteris was arrested at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9.
He took the UTV from Mike’s Engine Works, 231 Washington St., then crashed it into property adjacent to a nearby business during his getaway, according to Chief of Police Jason King.
Butteris was taken by Darlington EMS to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County for treatment of minor injuries. He was later taken to a mental health hospital.
The crash totaled the UTV and caused about $2,000 in damage to property next to Tuescher Electric, 231 Cornelia St., which is about three blocks from Mike’s Engine Works.
Police reported finding a Vipertek stun gun on Butteris, which is illegal without a concealed carry permit. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted police in arresting Butteris on charges of theft of property, carrying an electric weapon and criminal damage to property.
