TOWN OF SPRING GROVE - An intoxicated Beloit driver was flown by MedFlight helicopter to a Madison hospital with life-threatening injuries after running a stop sign and colliding with another car just east of Brodhead Sunday afternoon, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department.

Colton P. Van Marter, 21, was southbound on County T in the Town of Spring Grove just before 3 p.m. when he failed to stop at the intersection with Wisconsin 81 and collided with an eastbound car.

The driver of the eastbound car, Robin M. Smith, 52, Beloit, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. Her vehicle came to a rest in a nearby ditch. It had severe front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Van Marter's car went off the same side of the road, collided with a sign post and then skidded about 100 feet into the adjacent field, leaving a blackened path in its wake. A MedFlight helicopter flew him from the scene to the University of Wisconsin hospital in Madison for treatment of critical injuries.

A representative at the hospital did not have a report on his condition as of about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Van Marter was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to a news release on the accident submitted by Green County Deputy Cody Kanable. The airbags in both Van Marter's and Smith's cars deployed. Van Marter's car sustained severe passenger-side damage and was towed.

Van Marter was cited for second-offense operating while intoxicated causing injury, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving with a revoked license and no vehicle insurance and failing to wear a seatbelt.

The intersection was closed about two and a half hours Sunday afternoon as deputies, firefighters and other first responders worked to rescue the drivers, tow out the cars and clean up scattered debris along the side of the road.

Brodhead EMS, the Brodhead Fire Department, Orfordville EMS, Town of Beloit Paramedics, Rock County deputies, Brodhead Police, Mercy MD-1 and the Green County Highway Department assisted at the scene.
