Main Street in midst of transition

MONROE - The Monroe Main Street Board has advertised for a new executive director, and has a new board chairman.

Main Street announced June 10 that Barb Nelson will end her term as executive director July 3. She began her work with Main Street Jan. 1, 2007.

Dr. David Riese resigned as board chairman Tuesday, but remains a member of the board.

Vice-chairman Ryan Wilson will become chairman.

Wilson said Tuesday he does not know what the board will do about filling the vice-chair position.

At a meeting Monday, the board discussed the need for a new director in order to maintain Monroe's charter with Wisconsin Main Street.

Board members also explored Monroe Main Street's relationship with The Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to see if the two organizations could be combined in any way.

According to Riese, a community with a population of 2,500 or more is expected to have a full-time executive director of Main Street.

"If we seriously got together with the chamber, then Monroe Main Street director would have to be overseeing the chamber," he said.

Board member Mike Doyle said Monroe Main Street was "financially struggling." In a discussion he said he had with Monroe Mayor Bill Ross, the idea of "purchasing services from the chamber" came up.

The city is currently purchasing from the chamber the services of its director, Pam Christopher, for economic growth, at about $12,500 a year.

The city and the Monroe Business Improvement District contribute about $25,000 annually each to Main Street. Main Street is expected to raise an extra $25,000 in donations.

In the past year, the board has found contributions have not been as high as in past years, when contributors made three-year pledges in 2005; although, sponsorships of specific Main Street events remained high.

Doyle said about half of Main Street's budget goes to pay personnel.

"It comes to a point where we may have to go back to BID (Monroe Business Improvement District) doing it all," he said.

In 2009, the city began paying its yearly contribution from the downtown Tax Increment District No. 7 fund.

Monroe was announced as a Wisconsin Main Street Community in July 2005.

Board members are Ryan Wilson-Chair, John Baumann, Mike Doyle, Dan Henke, JoAnne Leuenberger, Diane Phillips, David Riese, Mike Sanders and Ron Spielman. The board's next meeting is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., July 12, at city hall.
