MAC to host painting exhibit

MONROE - From Friday, April 1 through Friday, April 29, the Monroe Art Center (MAC) Frehner Gallery presents Human Habitations, a painting exhibit by Freeport, Ill., artist Carolyn Mastroianni. This series of works explores the interior landscapes of the places that humans call home. The juxtaposition of natural biomorphic shapes with the geometry imposed by man gave her great inspiration for this exhibit.

"The magic of the world around me, colors, textures, and shapes fires my need to capture the essence of life on canvas," explains Mastroianni.

Mastroianni received her Bachelor of Science degree, major in Art and a minor in Math from South Dakota State University. She worked within the Freeport School District for many years before earning her Master of Arts at Northern Illinois University in 1994. After thirty-six years of teaching, she is now a self-employed oil painter for the past seven years. In addition to her own artwork, she is currently the chair of the Freeport Art Museum Collections Committee.

Also on exhibit at MAC during the month of April is the work by artists participating in the 24th Annual Wisconsin Regional Art Program Competition. This year over thirty amateur artists will compete in this program hoping to have their work earn a State or Honorable Mention Exhibit Award. Being a WRAP State Award winner allows artists to compete at the state WRAP competition held during September in Madison. Mastroianni will serve as judge for the 2011 WRAP competition.

An artist workshop, which is open to the public, will be conducted by Carolyn Mastroianni on Saturday, April 30, from 9:30 a.m to noon, at the Monroe Arts Center. A $5 fee workshop fee is required.

An opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled for Friday, April 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery, with a brief gallery talk by Mastroianni at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

This exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter-Colony Brands Inc. and Season Media Underwriters-Monroe Publishing, LLC and Big Radio; with additional support from Michael & Shelley Muranyi, Pete Guenther, Barb Woodriff; and Lee and Chris Knuteson.
