MONROE - The Col. Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is participating in the national celebration to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. All women who can document descent from a Revolutionary War veteran are encouraged to join the service organization, which has promoted historic preservation, education and patriotism since its formation in 1890.

"Our chapter, which was organized in 1919, with some members of the Shullsburg Chapter organized in 1914, carries out the important mission of the National Society here on the local level," said chapter Regent Barb Nemec. "We are eager to welcome new members to our chapter, and we have volunteers available to help them research and complete their genealogy in order to apply for membership."

The internet has made genealogical research much easier. The Genealogical Research System (GRS), which is a free online resource provided by the DAR to aid general genealogical research and to assist with the DAR membership process, has made joining the DAR even more accessible to many women. Explore these resources at www.dar.org/grs.

The chapter is also holding a free lineage workshop at the Monroe Public Library from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 24. It is open to the public. Prior registration by calling Nemec at 482-2483 is requested.

Since its founding, more than 940,000 women have been inducted into the organization. During the current three-year administration coinciding with the 125th anniversary celebration, the organization has issued a challenge to complete 10 million hours of service to America. Local DAR chapters nationwide are coordinating service projects in honor of DAR's 125th anniversary throughout the year and members across the country will participate in the National DAR Day of Service on Oct. 11.

The local chapter does its own projects and coordinates efforts on a state and national level to help veterans, active duty military, historical preservation, patriotism and education. It obtained grant funds for the Darlington Area Veterans' Memorial and the Depot Museum's new roof. The group promotes Constitution Week and administers the DAR Good Citizen Awards and Essay contest in schools. Members are from throughout Green and Lafayette counties.
